چکیده

A theory is presented to account for the increase in surface tension of water in the presence of electrolyte. Unlike the original “grandcanonical” calculation of Onsager and Samaras, which relied on the Gibbs adsorption isotherm and lead to a result which could only be expressed as an infinite series, our approach is “canonical” and produces an analytic formula for the excess surface tension. For small concentrations of electrolyte, our result reduces to the Onsager-Samaras limiting law.

Study of interfacial tension between an organic solvent and aqueous electrolyte solutions using electrostatic dissipative particle dynamics simulations.

The study of the modification of interfacial properties between an organic solvent and aqueous electrolyte solutions is presented by using electrostatic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. In this article, the parametrization for the DPD repulsive parameters a(ij) for the electrolyte components is calculated considering the dependence of the Flory-Huggins χ parameter on the concent...

Ions at the water-oil interface: interfacial tension of electrolyte solutions.

A theory, based on a modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation, is presented that allows us to calculate the excess interfacial tension of an electrolyte-oil interface accurately. The chaotropic (structure-breaking) ions are found to adsorb to the water-oil interface as the result of large polarizability, weak hydration, and hydrophobic and dispersion interactions. However, kosmotropic (structure-mak...

Effects of ion solvation on phase equilibrium and interfacial tension of liquid mixtures.

We study the bulk thermodynamics and interfacial properties of electrolyte solution mixtures by accounting for electrostatic interaction, ion solvation, and inhomogeneity in the dielectric medium in the mean-field framework. Difference in the solvation energy between the cations and anions is shown to give rise to local charge separation near the interface, and a finite Galvani potential betwee...

Surface and interfacial tensions of hofmeister electrolytes.

We present a theory that is able to account quantitatively for the surface and interfacial tensions of different electrolyte solutions. It is found that near the interface, ions can be separated into two classes: the kosmotropes and the chaotropes. While the kosmotropes remain hydrated near the interface and are repelled from it, the chaotropes loose their hydration sheath and become adsorbed t...
